Avoid Sharing Holiday Treats with Your Pet&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although seasonal foods are one of the highlights of the holiday season\u2014hello turkey, mashed potatoes, and green bean casserole!\u2014pets should not share in these delightful bites.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dangers to pets abound: chocolate, xylitol (found in sugar-free sweets), onions, garlic, grapes, cooked bones, and fatty meats all pose a risk to pets. Onions, garlic, chocolate, and xylitol can cause anything from stomach upset to serious illnesses. Cooked bones can splinter and get stuck in your pet\u2019s digestive system. Rich, fatty gravies can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.longmeadowvetclinic.com\/blog\/how-to-spot-a-sick-cat\/\">upset your cat<\/a> or dog\u2019s sensitive stomach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maintaining dog and cat safety in Katy and around is as simple as sticking to your pet\u2019s regular diet. If you want to share the holiday cheer with your pet, aim for pet-safe treats like carrots, apples, and seasonal treats like special biscuits or jerky.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also offer small amounts of plain, skinless, and boneless cooked turkey to your cat or dog. Cooked pumpkin is a great choice, too. As with any treat, just don\u2019t overdo it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Decorate Wisely to Prevent Accidents&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Holiday decorations are exciting for everyone\u2014pets included. But some can be dangerous if your furry family member decides to chew or eat them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cats might swallow string-like d\u00e9cor (tinsel and ribbon are big no-nos), while dogs might chew on cords or plastic and glass ornaments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid distress, injury, and high vet bills by keeping these types of d\u00e9cor out of your home. If you do want to use anything with a cord\u2014like holiday lights\u2014consider using cord protectors or keeping the lights well out of reach of a curious kitty or pup.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure you unplug all decorations before you leave your pet at home alone. And if you use a live Christmas tree, make sure to cover the water basin so your pet doesn\u2019t drink from it. Any candles or essential oils should only be used with your supervision.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Create a Safe, Calm Space During Gatherings&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re hosting a holiday gathering, keep your pet\u2019s comfort level in mind. Many dogs and cats feel anxious when strangers come into their personal space. Some feel the urge to run outside and into the darkness, while others might show behaviors they don\u2019t normally exhibit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s vital to make sure pets feel as comfortable as possible during any large gatherings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designate a quiet room as your pet\u2019s safe haven.
